Integrity
I began my first job at the age four, on our family farm. Important tasks like scattering feed for our chickens, milking the cows, and slopping hogs made up my daily chores list, every morning, and every evening.
The farm life that consumed my free time wasn’t like what you see in the movies. Doing those chores also meant gathering equipment, measuring out the right amount of feed, checking on the animals to see if they needed additional care, and then putting everything away. It was a lot of responsibility.
There was no skipping a day because I did not feel like freezing in the cold Iowa winters or because I would rather be at the creek fishing on a hot summer day. The animals depended on me, and so did my family. My job was to be of service to both.I honored my parents and siblings by following through, from start to finish, for more than a decade. I am glad I did, too, because farm chores taught me about integrity. Today it is the core of who I am. I am a person with a strong faith in God and I strive to follow Biblical values in my interaction with others. Do others as you would have them do unto you.
The best businesses bring integrity to every conversation. You should not settle for anything less. I do not.

Respect
Since leaving the family farm, I have served in a variety of careers.
I’ve supervised more than a dozen telemarketing reps, managed IT projects across thirteen states, and worked with the Department of Health Services as a section security officer. In this last role, I wrote many of the agency section's security policies and enforced them.
As I traveled all over the state meeting with local and private health agency medical directors, managers, and staff to review their security standards and help them stay out of trouble, I recognized the role respect plays in relationships. Respect is especially critical when working with a customer.

Communication
I would like to tell you a secret about communication. It is something I learned as a Toastmaster, and it was reinforced when I became the District Director of District 55 Toastmasters International. I would think that taking on this role would mean that I had to talk – a LOT. I did.
But I also learned another skill Listening. This became particularly important when I was appointed by the Toastmasters International board of directors to serve as a Region Advisor for seven Toastmaster districts. In this role, I provided training and mentorship to leaders so they could become more effective communicators and enhance their leadership skills.
In my many years of giving speeches and presentations to groups and organizations about leadership development and knowing your true self, I discovered that good communication is less about talking to others. It is listening to what people say.
As your mentor, I want you to help you learn the value of listening.
Service
In my earlier childhood years, I had the opportunity to personally observe others working together in service toward those who were in need. My stepfather was involved in an accident which resulted in the loss of our primary source of income. There were winters growing up on the farm in Iowa where we barely had enough fuel to keep our house warm let alone make sure our family of nine were fed and clothed. The people in our small farming community and the small community churches through various service projects made sure my family and others in need were taken care of. I’m a Rotarian. I joined Rotary International because they are a global nonprofit organization whose focus is on service to the world, and our communities. In addition to Rotary International, I donate to other community service organizations including Isaiah 117 who provides care and supplies for foster children, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Billy Graham Evangelical Association.
I am a member of Foothills Church in Maryville where you can hear the gospel being preached every Sunday along with the great music. The church has a fantastic children’s ministry for children all the way through high school.
